Because of 922r, we weren't going to get a Swiss 55x, and the people who owned real 55xs were never going to accept anything Sig USA came out with because they had to justify their now $10K+ babies as being superior and worth every penny. I honestly don't think that people wanting but not getting a Swiss 55x clone had that much of an impact in the end. If anyone knows of a solution, or even where to start digging around, please let me know - I don't want her to continue to be part of the garage queen squad any longer if at all possible to re-config.I think the 556 platform failed because it had reached an evolutionary dead end and couldn't compete a world of cheaper, more customizable ARs, and In the end Sig declined to support it because they had moved onto the next big thing, the MPX and MCX. So here I am posting, letting you know the challenge I face along with my desire to re-introduce my 556 into the rifles I take to the range/desert, to resurrect it, to bring its features and weight into modern times. So you'd think there'd be a solution, but I'm not coming up with anything. And as crazy rare (and unobtainable in CA) the 550/551 is, they aren't so hard or rare in Canada and parts of Europe. I realize the 556 classic has been replaced and is 'old news', but I also know quite a few were sold. Anything in-between the classic plastic and the crazy heavy full rail sampson.īut, alas, my normal google-fu is failing me. So recently I started googling around to see what I could do and what I could find - ideally an easy to install mlok rail (as easy to install as the quad rail Samson was, for example) system would be fantastic. I still love the gun, but it also feels 'left behind'. So the 556 has been a garage queen for quite a few years, to say the least. It brought the weight up from an already too heavy gun to a crazy too heavy gun, but at that time, who knew about saving weight, Mlok vs kmod, aluminum-magnesium and even aluminum-lithium alloys, Ti where it made sense, etc.

I couldn't stand the all plastic but no real attachment points on the 556 Classic, so soon after I bought the Samson full rail system which was pretty easy to install. Good stuff but don't make me retire the 556 please :) Later SIG then came out with the SIG 516 and M400 to hit the AR market, the 556xi to upgrade the 556, and then even later the MPX and MCX. This was during the time where many people were having quality issues with SIG, especially their rifles - lucky for me my 556 has been flawless - runs perfectly, no jams, no feeding issues, relatively accurate, etc. I was (and am) a huge Sig 550/551 fan and so before I became familiar with ARs and other rifles, the 556 was purchased first. Ok, one of my first bullet button rifles bought, when I first heard about the bullet button, so probably a decade+ ago, was a SIG 556 Classic.
